Following House Passage of ‘Cures’ Bill, Briefing for Hill Staff on Thursday, July 16 Will Examine Policy Issues in Personalized Medicine

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) to Deliver Introductory Remarks

WASHINGTON (July 14, 2015)

On the heels of the 21st Century Cures bill’s passage in the House last week, the Personalized Medicine Coalition (PMC) will co-host a briefing with Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) this Thursday, July 16 to discuss what personalized medicine means for patients and examine the relevant policy issues, including those in regulation and reimbursement. The event will take place from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. ET in the Russell Senate Office Building’s Kennedy Caucus Room (room 325).

In addition to remarks from Sen. Klobuchar, the event will feature a panel of experts representing patients, health care providers, government and the biopharmaceutical and diagnostics industries.

Stephanie Haney will kick off the panel discussion by explaining how personalized medicine has assisted in her battle with stage IV lung cancer. Keith Stewart, the director of Mayo Clinic’s Center for Individualized Medicine, will describe what personalized medicine is and why it is so important. Industry representatives Greg Keenan of AstraZeneca and Michael Pellini of Foundation Medicine will continue the dialogue with an explanation of the field’s development challenges, and Kathy Hudson of the National Institutes of Health will round out the discussion with an overview of the President’s Precision Medicine Initiative.

“The briefing is a powerful opportunity to demonstrate how we can incentivize the development of a more efficient health system by incorporating personalized medicine perspectives into the policies Congress is currently considering to improve health care for all Americans,” said PMC Executive Vice President Amy M. Miller, Ph.D.
