Informed by an advanced understanding of the challenges associated with scaling diagnostic testing as well as a nuanced appreciation for the principles of human heterogeneity that make some patients more susceptible to severe illness than others, leaders in the field of personalized medicine, which uses cutting-edge diagnostic tests to guide medical interventions to those who need them most, are well-positioned to assist the United States in detecting outbreaks of COVID- 19 and mitigating the unpredictable effects of the disease in individual patients. It is in this context that the co-chairs of the Congressional Personalized Medicine Caucus partnered with the Personalized Medicine Coalition, a nonprofit education and advocacy organization, to organize The Personalized Medicine Community’s Response to COVID-19, a virtual educational briefing that took place on June 30, 2020.
