PMC Releases A Consumer’s Guide to Genetic Health Testing

Coalition Makes Printed Copies Available to Health Care Institutions for Distribution to Consumer Audiences

WASHINGTON (April 22, 2019)

DownloadThe Personalized Medicine Coalition (PMC) today released A Consumer’s Guide to Genetic Health Testing that describes what genetic tests are, outlines the types of information the tests can provide, and explains what consumers should consider before ordering an at-home genetic test directly from a genetic testing company. The Coalition will make complimentary printed copies of the Guide available for PMC members to distribute to consumer audiences. Non-PMC members can order printed copies for a nominal fee.

“Recognizing that the marketing of genetic testing directly to consumers has become a source of contention for health care professionals and confusion for consumers, PMC is pleased to announce the availability of the Guide to Genetic Health Testing, which answers key questions consumers have about the purposes and limitations of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic tests,” said PMC President Edward Abrahams.

The Guide introduces consumers to DTC testing, prompts educated questions, and encourages interactions with genetic counselors and other health care professionals as appropriate. It is divided into sections, as follows:

  • “What is Genetic Testing?”
  • “Why Would I Order Genetic Health Testing?”
  • “What Should I Consider Before Ordering Genetic Health Testing?”
  • “How Can I Order A Genetic Health Test?”
